Root causes

What causes foundation problems in Alabama

Alabama's red and orange clay soils, common around Birmingham and central Alabama, are rich in expansive minerals. They swell as they absorb water in wet seasons and shrink during summer drought, leaving voids beneath concrete. This cycle is the primary driver of foundation movement for most Alabama homeowners.

Our humid climate delivers more than 55 inches of rain a year. When perimeter drainage is inadequate, water pools against the foundation, saturates the soil, and raises hydrostatic pressure on basement walls.

Older homes, especially those built before the 1970s, often sit on footings that never reached stable soil depth. In Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley, karst limestone can dissolve into subsurface voids, so settlement there can be sudden and requires site-specific assessment.

Solutions

APS foundation repair solutions

We select the right method based on your soil conditions, structure type, and severity of damage.

Steel Push Piers

Galvanized pier sections are hydraulically driven to load-bearing strata, transferring the structure's weight and stopping movement. Ideal for significant settlement on clay soils.

Helical Piers

Steel shafts with helical plates are torque-driven without heavy equipment, verified by torque readings. Well suited for lighter structures, additions, and limited-access sites.

Wall Anchors

A steel plate on the interior wall connects by rod to a buried anchor in stable soil, stabilizing a bowing wall and restoring it toward plumb over time.

Carbon Fiber Straps

High-tensile carbon fiber straps are epoxied vertically to the wall, preventing further inward movement without excavation. Low profile and permanent when caught early.

Epoxy Crack Injection

Two-part epoxy fills cracks under pressure, bonding the concrete back together often stronger than the surrounding material. Used for dry, non-moving cracks.

Polyurethane Injection

Expanding polyurethane foam fills wet or actively leaking cracks, forming a watertight, flexible seal. Preferred when cracks are damp or slight movement continues.

Huntsville area homeowners: because of karst limestone geology in parts of Madison County, we do not prescribe a pier type without a thorough site assessment first. The right solution depends on what we find in your soil and rock. A free site visit is always the first step.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have a foundation problem?

Common signs include sticking doors or windows, diagonal cracks above door corners, uneven or sloping floors, gaps between walls and ceilings, bowing basement walls, and stair-step cracks in brick. If you notice any of these, schedule a free assessment.

How long does foundation repair take?

Most residential foundation repairs are completed in one to three days. The duration depends on the scope, a small crack injection may take a few hours; a multi-pier underpinning project may take two to three days.

Is foundation repair covered by homeowner's insurance?

Standard homeowner's insurance typically covers sudden, accidental damage but not gradual settlement caused by soil movement. Some policies cover specific perils like plumbing leaks that undermine a foundation. Review your policy and consult your insurance agent.

What warranty does APS provide?

APS provides both the manufacturer warranty on all installed products and an in-house performance warranty. All warranties are transferable to new owners, which is a significant selling point when listing the home.

Does APS work in Huntsville?

Yes. APS has a Huntsville office at 3001 9th Ave SW #12a. Huntsville sits over karst limestone geology that requires site-specific assessment before recommending pier types: we always perform a complimentary site assessment before writing an estimate in Madison County.
