What This Means

What Deteriorating or Falling Insulation Tells You About Your Crawl Space Repair

Severity: Moderate

Deteriorating crawl space insulation shows as fiberglass batts that are sagging between the joists, hanging down, darkened, or lying on the crawl space floor. Dry insulation stays in place; insulation that is falling has absorbed moisture, lost its grip and its R-value, and often started growing mold. In Alabama's humid crawl spaces this is a common sight, and it signals both a moisture source that needs correcting and a loss of the energy efficiency the insulation was supposed to provide.

Humid Alabama crawl spaces routinely waterlog fiberglass insulation, so sagging and fallen batts are a frequent sign APS is called to diagnose in Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Columbus, Georgia.

Common Causes

What Causes Deteriorating or Falling Insulation in Alabama Homes

Moisture Saturating the Batts

Humid crawl space air and ground moisture soak fiberglass insulation. Wet batts grow heavy, sag, and eventually pull free of the joists, and once wet they no longer insulate.

No Vapor Barrier Below

Without a sealed vapor barrier on the crawl space floor, moisture evaporates directly up into the insulation, keeping it damp and accelerating its collapse.

Condensation and Poor Ventilation

Humid air condensing in the crawl space wets the insulation from the air side, while trapped moisture keeps it from ever drying, so it steadily deteriorates.

Mold and Material Breakdown

Persistently wet insulation grows mold and its facing and fibers break down, which is why deteriorating insulation and crawl space mold so often appear together.

Signs the Insulation Has Failed

Signs You Should Not Ignore

  • Batts sagging between joists or hanging down
  • Insulation lying on the crawl space floor
  • Darkened, matted, or visibly damp insulation
  • Mold on the insulation or the framing near it
  • Uneven floor temperatures or rising energy bills
What APS Does

How We Diagnose and Repair the Problem

  1. 1

    Free On-Site Assessment

An APS technician visits your property, documents the symptom and severity, and reviews all related indicators to build a complete picture.

  2. 2

    Root Cause Diagnosis

The lasting fix addresses the moisture first: sealing the crawl space with encapsulation and controlling humidity keeps the space dry, and new insulation installed in a sealed, conditioned crawl space stays in place and keeps working.

  3. 3

    Written Estimate

You receive a clear written scope of work and cost estimate before any repair begins. No obligation.

  4. 4

    Repair With Transferable Warranty

All APS foundation repairs carry a warranty that transfers to future owners. Serving Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville, and Columbus, GA.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my crawl space insulation keep falling down?

Because it is getting wet. Fiberglass batts absorb crawl space moisture, grow heavy, and lose their grip on the joists. Replacing them without fixing the moisture just repeats the problem, so the moisture has to be controlled first.

Can I just put the insulation back up?

Re-hanging or replacing wet-prone insulation in a still-damp crawl space is temporary. Once the space is sealed and dry through encapsulation and humidity control, new insulation stays in place and actually saves energy.

Does falling insulation mean I have a mold problem too?

Often yes, because the same moisture that ruins the insulation feeds mold. APS inspects for mold and the moisture source together, since they share a cause and are best solved at the same time.

What does APS recommend?

We find and stop the moisture, seal the crawl space, and then install insulation suited to a conditioned crawl space. The result holds up and improves comfort and energy use. You get a written plan and a free estimate.
