Warning signs your basement has a water problem
Basement water rarely announces itself with a flood. It shows up first as dampness, odor, and staining. Catching it early keeps a manageable problem from becoming a structural one.
What causes basement water problems in Alabama
Alabama averages more than 55 inches of rain a year, among the highest in the continental US. Saturated clay soil holds that water against your foundation and builds hydrostatic pressure that pushes moisture through every crack, joint, and pore it can find.
That pressure is not seasonal. It is present whenever the soil is wet, which in Alabama is most of the year. Water enters at the wall-floor joint, through cracks in the wall, and through the porous block itself.
Poor exterior drainage makes it worse. Gutters that discharge at the foundation, ground that slopes toward the house, and clogged footing drains all concentrate water exactly where the basement is most vulnerable.

APS basement waterproofing solutions
We identify where and why water is entering before recommending a system, then stop it at the source.
Interior Drainage and Sump Pump
A perimeter drainage channel collects water at the wall-floor joint and routes it to a sump pump with battery backup, discharged away from the foundation.
French Drain Installation
A buried perforated drain relieves hydrostatic pressure and carries groundwater away before it reaches the basement wall.
Exterior Waterproofing Membrane
Full excavation, a waterproof membrane, and drainage board on the outside of the wall, the most comprehensive way to keep water out.
Basement Crack Repair
Epoxy injection for structural cracks and polyurethane foam for actively leaking cracks, with the root cause assessed before any injection.
Vapor Barrier
A wall vapor barrier blocks residual moisture and humidity from migrating into the finished space.
Yard Drainage and Grading
Regrading, downspout extensions, and surface drains move water away from the foundation before it can build pressure.
Root cause first: APS finds where and why water is entering before recommending a system. Sealing a symptom without relieving the pressure behind it only moves the problem. A free assessment identifies the source.
Serving Alabama and Columbus, GA
Four locations mean local crews, local permit familiarity, and faster response than regional competitors.
Birmingham and Irondale
Our home base since 1977. We know Jefferson and Shelby County soils, water tables, and permit offices better than anyone.
Huntsville, AL
Serving the Tennessee Valley. We assess each site before recommending a drainage system, since terrain and water table vary widely here.
Mobile, AL
HBLB licensed for South Alabama, where a high water table and heavy coastal rain make basement waterproofing essential.
Columbus, GA
Full basement waterproofing across the Columbus metro, including Phenix City. Same APS standards, warranty, and family ownership.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Alabama have so many basement water problems?
Alabama combines high annual rainfall (55+ inches), expansive clay soils that transmit hydrostatic pressure efficiently, and a building stock with older waterproofing membranes that have degraded over time. The Gulf influence also brings intense tropical storm events that can deliver several inches of rain in a few hours.
Does a sump pump alone solve basement water problems?
A sump pump manages water after it enters. It does not stop water from entering. For chronic seepage, a perimeter drainage system collects water at the wall base and routes it to the pump, together they manage the problem. Crack injection and exterior waterproofing stop entry at specific points.
How long does interior drainage installation take?
Most interior perimeter drainage installations are completed in one to two days. Concrete is saw-cut, the channel installed, and concrete patched flush with the existing floor.
