The Solution

What Are Crawl Space Access Wells?

A crawl space access well is a retaining structure that holds the surrounding soil back from a below-grade vent or access opening, and a well cover keeps rainwater and debris out of it. When the ground around part of the foundation is higher than an opening, soil and water press directly against it, undermining any effort to keep the crawl space sealed and dry. APS installs access wells with covers so these low openings stay clear and protected, letting the vent or access do its job without becoming a channel for water and mud. It is a targeted piece of a complete crawl space water-management and encapsulation plan on homes where grade sits above an opening.

How It Works

How Crawl Space Access Wells Work

A rigid well is set against the foundation around the below-grade opening, retaining the higher soil so it cannot spill against or block the vent or access. A cover over the well sheds rainwater and keeps out leaves and debris, while still allowing the opening to be reached for service. By holding the soil and water back, the access well removes a direct path for moisture and mud into the crawl space, protecting the sealed, dry conditions APS establishes with encapsulation and drainage.

“If the dirt outside is higher than the opening, you are fighting gravity. An access well holds the soil and water back so the opening stays clear.”

The Process

How APS Installs Crawl Space Access Wells

  1. 1

    Assess the Grade and Opening

APS identifies openings that sit below the surrounding grade and are exposed to soil or water pressure.

  2. 2

    Excavate and Set the Well

The soil is cut back and a rigid well is set against the foundation to retain the higher grade around the opening.

  3. 3

    Secure to the Foundation

The well is fastened and sealed to the foundation so soil and water cannot get behind it.

  4. 4

    Fit the Cover

A cover is installed to shed rain and keep out debris while allowing access to the opening.

  5. 5

    Verify Protection

APS confirms the opening is clear, the soil is held back, and water is directed away from it.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a crawl space access well?

When a vent or access opening sits below the surrounding ground level, so soil and rainwater press against it. The well holds the grade back and keeps the opening clear, which protects the sealed crawl space.

Does the well cover keep rain out?

Yes. The cover sheds rainwater and keeps leaves and debris out of the well, so water does not collect against the opening and find its way inside.

Is this part of encapsulation?

It is a supporting piece where grade conditions require it. Encapsulation and drainage seal and dry the crawl space, and an access well protects a below-grade opening that would otherwise let soil and water in.

Can I still access the crawl space with a well installed?

Yes. The well and its cover are designed to keep soil and water back while still allowing the vent or access to be reached for service.
