The Solution

What Are Retaining Wall Anchors?

Retaining walls that lean, tilt, or show horizontal cracking are under active stress from soil pressure and water buildup. Left unaddressed, a failing retaining wall can collapse entirely, damaging landscaping, driveways, and adjacent structures. APS Foundation Repair and Waterproofing has stabilized retaining walls across Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Columbus, GA since 1977 using earth anchor systems engineered for the soil conditions common throughout Alabama. Our earth anchors are driven through or behind the wall and deep into stable, undisturbed soil. Steel rods connect wall plates to the anchors, allowing our crews to apply tension that halts further movement and, over time, can recover lost wall position. The system works with concrete block, poured concrete, timber, and segmental retaining walls, and requires minimal excavation or landscaping disruption.

How It Works

How Retaining Wall Anchors Work

Earth anchors work by mobilizing the passive resistance of stable soil beyond the failure zone. A steel rod is driven horizontally through or around the retaining wall and connected to a buried anchor plate positioned well into undisturbed native soil. A wall plate is then installed on the face or cap of the retaining wall and tensioned against the anchor. The tension counteracts the hydrostatic and soil pressure pushing the wall outward. Multiple anchors are installed at engineered spacing to distribute load evenly. Because the system is entirely below-grade after installation, it does not alter the appearance of your landscape and does not require rebuilding the wall.

“Retaining walls fail slowly, then suddenly. Once a wall has started to tilt, soil pressure does not stop, it increases. Installing earth anchors early is almost always far less expensive than waiting until the wall needs to be torn down and rebuilt from scratch.”

The Process

How APS Installs Retaining Wall Anchors

  1. 1

    Free On-Site Assessment

An APS foundation specialist inspects the retaining wall, evaluates wall type and material, measures tilt and displacement, and reviews soil and drainage conditions to determine anchor spacing, depth, and rod diameter.

  2. 2

    Anchor Positioning Layout

The crew marks anchor locations along the wall according to the engineered plan. Spacing is calculated based on wall height, surcharge load, and soil bearing capacity.

  3. 3

    Wall Plate Installation

Steel wall plates are positioned on the face or cap of the retaining wall at each anchor location and secured with temporary hardware while anchors are installed.

  4. 4

    Anchor Driving

Using hydraulic equipment, earth anchors are driven through or behind the wall to the design depth in stable soil. The driving process does not require open excavation in most cases.

  5. 5

    Rod Installation and Tensioning

Steel connecting rods are threaded from wall plates to anchors. Tension is applied incrementally using calibrated torque equipment to stabilize the wall and, where conditions allow, begin recovering displaced position.

  6. 6

    Drainage Check and Backfill

Drainage behind the wall is inspected and improved if needed, hydrostatic pressure is a primary cause of retaining wall failure. Disturbed soil is backfilled and compacted, and the area is restored.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my retaining wall needs anchors versus a full rebuild?

Walls that are still structurally intact but tilting or bowing outward are good candidates for earth anchors. If the wall has shattered, has extensive block failure, or has moved more than several inches, a rebuild may be required. An APS inspection will give you an honest assessment of both options.

Will you need to dig up my landscaping?

In most cases, no. Earth anchors are installed using driven rod techniques that minimize surface disturbance. Some hand digging near the wall face is typical, but large-scale excavation behind the wall is usually not required.

How soon after installation will the wall stop moving?

The wall is stabilized immediately upon tensioning. Ongoing monitoring over several months can confirm that movement has stopped. In favorable soil conditions, incremental re-tensioning can restore some of the wall's original position.

Does this work for timber retaining walls?

Earth anchors can be used with timber walls, though the anchor attachment method differs from masonry applications. Timber walls may also benefit from adding drainage improvements, which APS evaluates during inspection.

Are retaining wall anchors covered by a warranty?

Yes. APS provides both a manufacturer-backed warranty on anchor components and our own in-house workmanship warranty. Both are transferable to subsequent homeowners, which can be a benefit at time of sale.
