Expansive Clay Soil Saturation

Alabama's smectite clay minerals absorb water and can expand up to 30% in volume when fully saturated. Can upheaval be permanently repaired?

Will my slab go back down on its own?

Waiting and hoping is not a reliable strategy, each wet and dry cycle can cause additional cracking and displacement.

How do I know if it is upheaval or just normal slab variation?

Normal slab variation from original construction is static, it does not change. Upheaval is dynamic, the high area was not there before, or it has grown. If you can remember when the floor was flat and now it is not, that is not normal slab variation. An APS assessment with elevation mapping will confirm whether movement has occurred and how much.
