A sump pump sits in a lined basin set into the basement floor, usually at the low point where an interior perimeter drain terminates. Water reaching the footing runs to the basin, and the pump lifts it out through a discharge line that carries it far enough from the house that it does not simply return. The pump is one component of a drainage system rather than a standalone fix, and most basement pump failures are really system failures: a basin fed by nothing, a discharge line that freezes or dumps at the foundation, or a pump undersized for what an Alabama storm actually delivers.

How Basement Sump Pump Systems Work
Water entering at the wall and floor joint is intercepted by the perimeter drain and carried to the sump basin. A float switch senses the rising level and starts the pump, which lifts the water through a check valve and out the discharge line. The check valve stops the column of water in the line from draining back into the basin each time the pump shuts off, which is what otherwise causes short cycling and premature failure. Sizing follows head height and expected inflow, not habit. Do I need drainage as well, or is a pump enough?
A pump on its own only removes water that reaches the basin. Without a perimeter drain feeding it, water still enters at the wall and floor joint and travels across the slab. The drain collects, the pump discharges, and the two work as one system.
What happens when the power goes out?
A primary pump stops. In Alabama the heaviest storms and outages often coincide, which is exactly when the pump matters most, so a battery backup on a separate circuit is worth considering wherever a flooded basement would be costly.
How long does a sump pump last?
